The Grange University Hospital (SCCC)

Following the Welsh government’s investment of £350 million, Laing O’Rourke was tasked with delivering a much-needed replacement for the Royal Gwent Hospital in Cwmbran, which will serve over 600,000 people in Southeast Wales.

With 560 beds and over 55000 m2 of space the new build is designed to provide critical care treatment with its’ 24-hour Acute Assessment Unit and Emergency Department.

As a vital element of the works, and due to our expertise in the healthcare industry, Willis Systems was appointed by the main contractor to provide a complete package of healthcare IPS.  This includes all sanitaryware to the wards, departments, bedrooms, staff dirty and clean utility rooms, and all patient and visitor toilet areas.

Having previously worked with both Laing O’Rourke and The Trust on a variety of hospital projects, both were confident in the quality of our products and service delivered by Willis Systems. Peter Borley, MD of Willis Systems, stated that despite this being a huge project and biggest construction site in Wales in 2019 we relished the challenge and put all energies in making this work both in manufacture and the substantial site team required in delivering our works on time.

The Brief

The specification called for minimum on site work with finished goods called to site “just in time “.

This called for a lot of organisation from the Willis site team who were feeding up to 6 no M&E contractors at any one time. The adherence to programme was therefore paramount and resulted in us being amongst the team that delivered this complicated build on time.

The Product

Our HBN 00-10 Part C compliant Healthcare units have been developed from the old HTM64 and HTM68 Guidelines to fully meet and exceed current standards. We used Solid Grade Laminate Compact throughout as we do on all Healthcare projects ensuring the waterproof integrity of the IPS Units in the most extreme of conditions as well as providing a clean bacteria resistant panel. Sanitaryware was from Armitage Shanks, the UK’s leading brand for Healthcare, and taps were from Delabie, being the Hospital Trust preferred product.
